Water: Our Most Precious Resource

India has around 18% of the global population but only about 4% of the total freshwater resources. This disparity turns water into a very fiercely fought and critical natural asset. The increasing populations, urban sprawl, continuous industrialization, and changing climate have all contributed to the increasing demand for this indispensable resource. Proper water management is still necessary; however, it has become a national imperative.

Opportunities in Water Management

It is true that the problems are numerous, but the opportunities are also plentiful. These opportunities include sustainable groundwater management, water quality enhancement, modern irrigation, urban water infrastructure, wastewater treatment, and smart water technologies. The government’s flagship programs like Jal Jeevan Mission, Atal Bhujal Yojana, and Namami Gange are creating the path to a water, secure tomorrow. Nevertheless, achieving and maintaining success requires a single, concerted effort: the government, industry, civil society, and global partners must all be involved.

A Nation Thirsting for Change:  Statistics and Urgent Trends

  1. The availability of water per person has gone downhill from 5, 200 m³ in 1951 to 1, 486 m³ in 2021 approximately, and it is expected that it will fall even further to 1, 191 m³ by 2050, almost at the level of water scarcity.
  2. Groundwater Stress: There are 193 districts where the situation of water shortage is extremely serious, and Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana are the regions that suffer the most.
  3. Access to Clean Drinking Water: More than 15.71 million rural households (81.17%) have been provided with piped tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
  4. Urban Water Supply: 28 cities have treatment capacities of more than 2, 900 million liters per day, and the supply networks of more than 17, 000 km are being digitally monitored to reduce losses.
  5. Wastewater Treatment: 27 cities have a combined treatment capacity of almost 1, 370 MLD, and they are thus able to divert nearly half of their effluents for irrigation and industry.

The Path Forward: A Three, Pronged Strategy: Next, gen water solutions cannot be developed without support of three main pillars:

  1. Innovation Support: Establish testbeds, pilot projects, and incubators that effect local changes from the daring ideas. Startups targeting water tech breakthroughs will be powered with cross, sector collaboration and technical mentoring.
  2. Policy Incentives: Quick approval and financial rebates will facilitate the way for sustainable water innovations, thus decreasing the time, to, market and increasing the commercial success.
  3. Access to Finance: Blended funding strategies that combine public, private, and impact capital will gradually remove the risk of investments and will provide the energy for startups, which are focused on the needs of the community, especially those which are disadvantaged.
